While catching up with old friends on a social networking site, I noticed someone talking about making their own dish and clothes detergent. She didn’t give any specifics or directions on how to do it so I did an internet search for suggestions using my www.satellitestarinternet.com. I was amazed to find that it is not only easy but represents a huge cost savings. You can make laundry soap with as few as three ingredients: borax, shaved bar soap and washing soda. All are items you can find easily and cheaply. The hardest part is shaving the laundry soap. Based on the cost breakdowns and comparisons to commercial soaps, you can save a ton. If you like for your detergent to have a scent, you can add a fourth ingredient, an essential oil of your choice. Most sites recommend orange or lemon. To make the dishwasher detergent takes only four ingredients and is equally easy; washing soda, borax, citric acid and kosher salt. Another helpful cost savings I picked up for the dishwasher is to use vinegar as a rinse agent. Much cheaper than the store bought kind!
